Prior to his current role as Manager of Point of View in Melbourne, Bernie spent twelve years as a freelance Lighting Designer in the theatre industry. After graduating from NIDA he served as touring technical manager for companies such as Sydney theatre Company and Belvior Street Theatre. During this time he also served as Associate Lighting Designer to Nick Schlieper. Together they worked on many shows, not the least of which, was the Ring Cycle for State Opera of South Australia.
As a freelance Lighting Designer Bernie has worked with most major theatre and opera companies in Australia and many overseas. His body of work is extensive and varied. Some of the highlights have been; Eugene Onegin and La Boheme for New Zealand Opera, Daradnus for Pinchgut Opera and Travesties for Sydney Theatre Company.
Bernie has also returned to NIDA as a lecturer in lighting design and as a course advisor for the Lighting Design component of the technical production course.
His extensive experience in the entertainment industry has given him a unique understanding of how lighting and environment can have a profound effect on behaviour and emotions. As well as this, his vast touring itineraries have given him a passion for exploration of cultures.
Bernie enjoys cooking, jogging, photography and golf, despite wishing he was better at the latter.
